If you followed the road for a while you would come across this site. I seem to recall old, but small, billboards around the area as well.

p.s. It really is great to see images of areas I spent my childhood from the other side of the world! Thanks to all who are posting images!
I remember the gravel road that went through from the top end of Cinabar Dr. and came out near the juntion of Extension Road and White Rapids Road. Across from the old Greenaway farm i think it was. Kids used to get off the school bus and cut through there. I kinda remember the signs you are refering to but not a racetrack per se. May be that we used to ride our mini bikes up in there though. I will put up a few more photos on that picasa site soon. Merry Christmas.

Thanks for sharing about Elaine Hamilton. She was a busy lady who always remembered everyone.
As for the trussel, I own accross the street from it! In behind there is stark creek, and along the coal slags is all kinds of wonderful garbage. Parts from an old logging truck, bottles. My neighbor said there was an old cabin back there once, but i haven't found it yet. A really nice bear too. At least I think he's nice. I rarely see him. And rats. they burrow into the coal slag and have tunnels. accidently dug a few up one winter! Started looking around and discovered lots of holes.
It's a pretty nice area. I have heard that there are petroglyphs around. The place I think i was told was to follow the rock face in from the bungy zone towards south wellington? Not sure if that is the spot though.

Default where did all the trees go?

I was looking at Extension on Google Earth and wow where did all the trees go on the ridge behind the village!? It looks to have been almost clear cut. Am I right in this observation? The resolution for Nanaimo on Google Earth is pretty darn good these days. I hope I'm wrong.
    Regards David.

Default The great Extension Clear Cut...

    Dave,

Unfortunately, your eyes are not decieving you....all the second growth around Extension is pretty much gone, excepting a few hundred yards around the roadways so folks can't notice the harvesting. I walked up the top of the ridge the other day checking out a couple old coal mine pitheads, and was amazed at the size of the clearcuts...a hike up Mt. Benson would give you a good idea of just how much is gone....On the other hand, it does make for some interesting logging roads to bike and walk...

    Cheers,
    Al

Here's Extension Ridge seen from Roberts Roost, a year or two ago (2005 or 2006).

Maybe with a 45 gallon drum with one side cut out of it laying around?
As for the M&M crew, I think at least one of the girls is living down in Oregon.
I think the stables are kinda gone though!
I went to Extension in grade six, South Wellington for grade 7, then Cedar junior for 8,9, and 10. I think it was 1974 for Extension school for me.
By the way, welcome DelightfulR, and hello to Al, and all the rest and Merry Christmas!
    Best regards, Dave.

    Is this the same drum?http://www.nanaimoinformation.com/fo...?t=437&page=70

I would have to say that that appears to be the drum we used as a camp fireplace. If you found it in the general vicinity of the place we were discussing I would say you are bang on. Is there a little stream nearby? By the way, thanks. That's pretty cool.
