We moved to Cinnabar Valley in 72, my Dad bought a few lots from Joe Garner, there wasn't even pavement on the roads then. The cattle ran freely all over the valley. We could ride our horses over the ridge into South Wellington, there was a natural spring on the top that the horses drank from. There was a gate at the far end of Torko's farm that lead through a small gulley, to the left there was a cave that went in about 20 ft or so, there were some old dishes and milk bottles and crates, there was a wagon down below. Wayno told us that a chinese man lived down there when he was a boy, he worked in Extension Mines. Might still be there. It backs onto White Rapids, been yrs since I've been there, kinda had an eery feeling to it.

When you come out of that gravel road at the top of Cinnabar drive there is a road across from it, I think it was the old road the used to lead to Extension, not sure, we used to ride through that way. Don't remember a race track..hmmmm. We explored every nook and cranny 3 horses could fit in.

Across from the old Greenaway farm i think it was. Kids used to get off the school bus and cut through there. I kinda remember the signs you are refering to but not a racetrack per se. May be that we used to ride our mini bikes up in there though. I will put up a few more photos on that picasa site soon. Merry Christmas.

Yes, there was Mr and Mrs Baker, Debbie, Randy, and I think Cindy Baker. Not Cindy, that was the name of the old horse they had. Omg, I was always down there, we were friends and I can't rember her name. As for the car dump, if you run into the train track there used to be a couple of old box cars sitting on that track..we used to ride down there and pretend we were robbing the train..lol

Umm..DelightfulR, when you are talking about accessing the secret valley from Nanaimo River Road are you refering to the entrance just before the old quarter mile straight stretch? There used to be an old car dump in there I think. See we used to go into the Secret Valley from Cinabar side, sort of cut through the farms fields and then well up behind the OLD barn area, and then down an old track in the trees following the creek I think. I haven't been there in over 30 years so my memory may be a bit hazy.

Mr. Riverrat, I used to know that ridge you were asking about as Garners Ridge, as old Joe Garner used to own the whole thing. I'm not sure if that's the real name. Could possibly be Cinabar Ridge. Nice area and if you know the way an easy walk between the Valley and the back end of South Wellington. I think there may be Petroglyphs up there in some areas but I don't remember for sure.
If you get the chance look for books written by Joe Garner. Interesting local lore by a local. He has passed on now though.

Man I wish I was over there to go on that hike with you folks! I took some pictures of the Farm when I was over this summer and as much as it has gotten bigger, it does not look that different.

DelightfulR did you live on the farm or somewhere real close? You mentioned riding fences for Mr. Torko. I had some second cousins who lived in one of the old farm houses on the ranch. Last name Baker. Any of this sound familiar?

    Best regards, Dave.

Her name was or is Lorretta. She's a second cousin of mine. We probably lived in the valley around the same time. I think we moved there in 73' or so. It was pretty cool back then. The Ridge was awesome. Used to walk to South Wellinton school that way sometimes. I knew most of the girls at M&M. Used to ride minibikes up around Greenaways gravel pit and all over the valley for that matter. Like you said, not many houses back then, and even fewer police. Loved going up to Extension. Used to rent horses at M&M's on weekends and ride them into Second Lake. We used to camp in the Secret Valley up behind Torkos. Cinnabar was a blast before all those houses got built.
    Maybe we know each other?

My parents still live there, in Cinnabar, but yah it's changed so much. We had some good times out there, and in Extension. I loved Cedar too.
