All About the Harbour City

the Gulf Islands

We're developing this section to provide Nanaimo visitors with a sense of what is all around us. No matter how long you're staying here, you have an opportunity to see some of the famous natural beauty of this region. We live amidst one of a very few archipelagoes in the world whose waters and climate are temperate - and it's barely discovered by the rest of the world!

The Gulf Islands are in the Georgia Strait, a small, calm inland sea with Vancouver on the eastern shore. This is a boating paradise with deep waters that teem with salmon and seals and crabs. The motifs include sandstone and arbutus groves, rustic nineteenth century settlements, and a native heritage that is visible in both contemporary and pre-colonial forms.

Visitors come here with their boats, rv's and bikes. Bike tours of the islands' vineyards are absolutely enchanting, a Mediterranean experience with the added element of uncrowded beaches and the ferries between daytrips. Campers will find sites right on the Pacific shore for the normal camping rates; and boaters come here during all seasons for our calm waters protected from the ocean by our long Vancouver Island.
