As the name implies, there is a hospital here, as well as other care-related faciltities. Helicopters and ambulances are frequently coming and going at the hospital, but it's pretty quiet otherwise.
The Hospital Area is a good entry point for people who want to try living in Nanaimo. It's not pretentious, nor very poor (generally); it's pretty, and convenient, and the location is about midway between downtown and the north end of Nanaimo (downtown is slightly closer).
