Nanaimo Campgrounds
We open tent flaps to see mild, misty mornings. After coffee, the clouds blow out and it gets very hot. And there is SO much water to jump into.
If you just want to coast your car into a pretty campsite in the woods with a trunk full of sleeping bags and food, then you are looking for a "campground". Nanaimo and the surrounding Mid-Island region has a few of these places, listed below.
Nanaimo Lakes Campsites
The beautiful Nanaimo Lakes are south and west, a long drive up the Nanaimo River Valley.

Newcastle Island Campground
Best camping in Nanaimo, if you like the ocean and don't need to bring your car. Catch the passenger ferry in downtown Nanaimo and you'll be on the island in ten minutes, and blown away by the huge trees and deer and otters.

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park
Great family camping 20 min north of Nanaimo (Parksville) by the ocean with good facilities and decently-private sites.
The BC Parks site says it well: "At low tide the ocean recedes almost a kilometer, providing an ideal place for visitors of all ages to play in the sand and explore the shoreline. When the tide rolls in over the sun-baked sand, the warmed water is unbeatable for swimming and salt water fun."
