The Vancouver Island Real Estate Board reports a market that has declined slightly in volume and value since the first years of the new century, but this is a stabilization. The VIREB published this "cautiously optimistic" article (pdf) about Nanaimo real estate in June 2009.

The demand for real estate in Nanaimo is maintained by its status as Vancouver Island's gateway. The future of ecotourism here cannot be overestimated, with international visitors by the millions drawn to the incredible power of the west coast beaches, the serene beauty of the archipelagoes of the Salish Sea, and some of the last remaining stands of old-growth forest in the Pacific Northwest.

But Nanaimo's charm isn't just in its environmental context. The city itself is a thriving multicultural hub with a lot of stuff to do, from avant-garde art societies to adventure games and a floating pub.

Retirement Destination

Nanaimo is a popular retirement destination, too. There are convenient amenities all over the city, including a modern hospital in the center of town. The weather is wet in the winter but very mild, and the spring/summers get hot enough for people to seek shade and swimming in the rivers.
