Things to do in Nanaimo

in rainy weather

This page is still being developed. Let us know if you have ideas for things to mention on this page!

Camping or shopping, just be prepared

It rains a lot here. Not as much as in Vancouver, but enough that you need a backup plan when you organize outings. Or you need to be able to ignore the rain while you do your thing. Most visitors can't do that, though, so this list might be helpful:

Pubs - There's a list of pubs downtown, on our "things to do downtown" page. For a more complete list, use our business directory: Pubs in Nanaimo

Local Bus Info

Giant Indoor Playground - Jumping Jiminy's is an indoor playspace for children, with tubes and tunnels and big slides and air hockey, basketball hoops, and much more. There are also tables and a café for the adults.

Shopping - Nanaimo has more shopping per capita than any other city in Canada. If that's not entirely true, it is very close. We have a shopping page with info about where the malls are.

Swimming - It's always worthwhile to visit the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, where you can have fun with the wet playground, waves, and waterslides, or you can relax in the spa facilities.

Nanaimo outdoor gallery wallArt: Nanaimo has more than its share of art galleries & studios, performance companies, and live music. Get involved in the art scene, or at least check it out!

Drive up Little Mountain - There's a really nice view of the mountains at the top of Little Mountain in Parksville (20 min north of Nanaimo), and the bonus is that you can drive right to the top.

Read through our forums - Our Nanaimo forum has all kinds of interesting local information, like collections of local photos, artifacts that people have found, to an interesting tunnel, to our little game of posting local photos and letting people guess where the photo was taken ("Guess Where This Is?" vol.1, vol.2, vol.3, vol.4).

Check HarbourLiving.ca for any events which might be happening indoors, like for instance at the Port Theatre or the museum, or at a coffee shop.
