All About the Harbour City

Westwood Lake Knoll

If this spot has a better name, I don't know it. It's a rocky hill at the eastern end of Westwood Lake. Anyone who's walked or run around the lake trail knows this hill, because it's the only real altitude change on the circuit. The view from the top is really serene, looking out over the lake, with its silent deadheads, and up at the rising slopes of the big mountain, Mt Benson.

The reason I've included this spot as a page, instead of just having a Westwood Lake page, is because it's a nice spot for a picnic (leave garbage and I WILL hunt you down). It's also accessible from two different parking areas, both of which are about a seven minute walk from the knoll.

The obvious approach is to park at the Westwood Lake Beaches parking lot, and walk east along the main trail. But you can also park at the trailhead at the top of Calder Rd. Calder is the super-steep hill off JinglePot, between the Parkway and the JinglePot Pub. Go to the top of Calder, turn right, then immediately turn left toward College Heights, and you can't miss the trail on the right. It's even mulched with cedar chips. Follow this easy trail for a few minutes, and you'll come to a crossroads near the hilltop. You'll know to pass through the crossroads, because you'll see the opening of the hilltop just ahead.
