Ladysmith Origins
This area was called Oyster Harbour in 1900, and it was the farthest point from Ladysmith, South Africa, where the British were besieged by the Boers.
Here in British Columbia, James Dunsmuir was packing up the coal operations and miners' homes in Wellington (now part of North Nanaimo) and moving them by rail to two new locations:
- Extension - where more mines were being sunk
- Oyster Harbour - where the coal was to be shipped
Dunsmuir renamed Oyster Harbour as Ladysmith, in recognition of the siege lifting in South Africa.
