Real Estate on Unceded Territory
As a real estate trading licensee, I assist people with buying and selling the "right" to own/occupy physical spaces and land that is managed by the governments of Canada, British Columbia, and multiple regional districts and municipalities, and the Islands Trust.
However, it's essential to acknowledge that these lands have been occupied for millennia by people who did not cede their own rights to the land - most of those rights were taken from them by governments and individuals who employed trickery, threats, bad-faith negotiation, cultural suppression, and physical force including murder and other acts of violence.
As someone whose ancestors may have participated in such acts, and in light of the benefits and privileges I enjoy in part because of that dark history while other people still suffer the negative effects, it's incumbent on me to acknowledge that history and those privileges, as well as to actively support acts of reconciliation. I vote for governments who lean in that direction, and I promote equitable ideas in my social and business circles. I am grateful to my indigenous neighbours and to their ancestors for maintaining the health of these lands that sustain me.
Specifically, I acknowledge that these are the unceded territories of the Snuneymuxw, Tsehaht, Snaw-naw-as, K'ómoks, Quw'utsun, Lyackson Mustimuhw and Stz'uminus nations.
