Hammond Bay Real Estate

Hammond Bay is a smallish body of water between Neck Point Park and Pipers Lagoon, but the name is used for a larger area in North Nanaimo between McGuffie Road and the Biological Station. A lot of Nanaimo's luxury homes are in this area, built to enjoy stunning ocean views.

Most of the waterfront lots were developed in the 1950s-1980s, and those homes enjoy mature landscaping and easy access to Hammond Bay Rd and its buses. There are new homes and developed vacant lots being constructed in the higher elevations all the time, looking way out over the Salish Sea to the Coastal Mountains and Vancouver. The steep slope allows for views from the upper floors of homes AND from the walk-out basements; you can imagine where the nicest basement suites in Nanaimo can be found!

Back to Nanaimo neighbourhoods

Stephenson Point

This neighbourhood straddles the north part of the mouth of Departure Bay. Many of its homes have stunning views into the bay and/or out to sea.

Most of the waterfront homes in Stephenson Point are luxurious, some with elaborate rockwork steps or ramps leading down to the street or to the rocky beach.

Stephenson Point is a 5-8 minute drive from the Departure Bay ferry terminal, a 10-13 minute drive from Downtown, and 9-12 minutes from Woodgrove Mall.

Hammond Bay History

In the earliest days of settlement this area was only for logging close to the shoreline, fishing, and then homesteading. The Page family had a large property around Page's Lagoon (now Pipers Lagoon) and Neck Point. In the early 1900s there was a whaling station somewhere in the area - I've read it was at the lagoon, but I've also read it was at Hammond Bay, nearer to Neck Point. Regardless, the station only operated for a couple years because every nearly every humpback whale in the Salish Sea was killed within a few years of the fishery being open (there were other stations including on Cortes Island).

New Developments in Hammond Bay

The Ridge - Golden Oaks area

Aerial photo showing location of "The Ridge", a proposed strata development in Nanaimo's Glen Oaks neighbourhood in the Hammond Bay areaPerched up in the very attractive Glen Oaks neighbourhood, this development will include 18 half-duplex units and three detached homes. It's not yet clear whether those 3 houses will be part of the strata.

Each unit will have an attached garage. Expect a landscape with exposed bedrock, which will likely be used in attractive ways to enhance the West Coast style architecture of these modern builds.

This is a very pretty location with nice homes including many detached freehold homes and one other high-end townhome development.

Although it's perched up high, the neighbourhood is surrounded by forest and most homes do not have a view. However, when driving or walking "toward town", you will encounter some of the best ocean and island views in the city.

Golden Oaks Crescent

Current/Ongoing
This is a new subdivision just off Hammond Bay Road, a few blocks south of Pipers Lagoon. The lots and pre-sale homes were listed as early as 2018, with development continuing to this day (Feb 2024).
